ARA Review by Ruth Ferguson of The Wonder Year
In The Wonder Year: Life and Love of an Exchange Student by Lucia Maraver, the author provides her account of what was a life-changing and eye-opening experience for her in the United States of America.
There were times that the author missed her biological family and native country, Spain. However, Lucia adapted well into her exchange family and their routines, so much that at the age of seventeen, she was able to accept that an outburst was a good thing from time to time. During the first semester at her American high school, Lucia was introduced to another girl whose native language was also Spanish and they connected right away. Lucia and her new friend would converse in their familiar tongue when they met between classes or after school. Undoubtedly, Lucia did not practice speaking as much English as she would have hoped before.
As Lucia’s year in the United States was winding down, she began to realize how short the time really felt after all. Even though Lucia intentionally did not want to fit into any group, during her year, she forged lasting relationships with family and friends that she never imagined, before taking that trip.
I enjoyed how the author seemed to be having a discourse with readers throughout the book, as if she was telling her story from a stage in front of a live audience. I liked how she welcomed readers into her life, as an introvert, which seemed as a brave and bold decision to write. I therefore see Lucia’s writing about herself as an encouragement for others who feel awkward about speaking about themselves.
Life is sometimes about taking bold steps that not only show us how much we can grow as individuals, but also let others see life’s experiences through our eyes.
As I read about Lucia’s experiences as an introvert in her book, I smiled as I thought of similar ones of my own. Reading about Lucia’s thoughts and experiences at that age of her life caused me to reminisce on my own stories as a late teen.
I must say that The Wonder Year: Life and Love of an Exchange Student was really interesting to read. Unfortunately, there were a number of errors, but overall, I enjoyed the author’s story. Therefore, I give The Wonder Year: Life and love of an exchange student by Lucia Maraver a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
