ARA Review by MariamRiaz of In It Together
Reading In It Together was more like a sincere discussion with a knowledgeable, profoundly spiritual friend than it was like leafing through a normal self-help book. Instead of preaching, Eckhart Aurelius Hughes offers guidance. And I think that's one of the book's best features.
The difference between your "primitive self" (the ego or body) and your "real you" (your soul or consciousness) is the central theme of the book. Although it seems like a straightforward idea, Hughes' presentation of it truly gets you to stop and consider how frequently we allow our egos to rule our actions. He exhorts the reader to rediscover themselves with peaceful awareness, presence, and unconditional love rather than via extravagant displays.
The book's overall serene and kind tone really stood out to me. Hughes doesn't overburden you with technical terms or intricate ideas. Rather, he uses lyrical language in a straightforward manner. Particularly when he talks on issues like pain, love, death, and identity, there are times when you feel as though he has reached into your mind and addressed things you've felt but never said.
His Humpty Dumpty metaphor was particularly lovely. It is reassuring and inspiring to know that we are not our "shell" and that our true selves remain intact even when life throws us for a loop. It seems spiritual in the greatest sense—grounded, human, and intensely personal but it isn't religious.
The Reason I'm Giving It 4 Stars Instead of 5:
Although the book is inspirational and emotionally impactful, there are a few sections where it might have been better organized, which is why it doesn't receive a 5-star rating. Certain readers may desire for a little more guidance or concrete actions because certain chapters feel more like a flood of ideas than a well-defined path. Additionally, several ideas are repeated, which, depending on your reading style, may either support the point or seem a little repetitive.
Having said that, it is abundantly evident this book was not intended as a how-to manual. It's more of a mirror, a reminder to slow down, inhale, and pay attention to what truly counts. It is a magnificent success in that regard.
In It Together is an experience rather than merely a book. One that encourages self-reflection, healing, and reestablishing relationships with others and oneself. This book is a present if you're feeling lost, overwhelmed, or simply searching for a more meaningful way to view the world. It helps you ask the appropriate question, which is sometimes precisely what we need, but it doesn't have all the answers.
Rating: 4/5 stars
A thoughtful, caring, and heartfelt book that gradually encourages you to become a better version of yourself.
