ARA Review by Chaotic_Reading of Roan

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

In, Roan: The Tales of Conor Archer, Conor arrives in a town riddled with things that aren’t human, and he gets thrown right into the middle of it all. He discovers some of the rumors he’s heard are true, though quite unbelievable at first. And all of it leads up to him having to fight an age old monster with the friends he’d made since arriving in town.

Riddled with mythos and lore, this book has an interesting storyline. It’s not a bad book, but it’s not a good book either. I found it to be a slow read that was just barely interesting enough to keep me turning the pages.

The blending of different religions was pretty cool, and it was nice to see some research done to make sure what was being spoken about had some truth behind it, even if there were some author liberties taken. I think most fantasy authors do this, and it’s not a bad thing, as long as it isn’t too far from the source material. The ancestry of all the “dark ones,” Conor included, was pretty neat, and the blend of the different mythos was cool.

The cast of characters was large and dispersed, which was nice to see. We were able to get to know them throughout the book, but it felt like the adults could have done more throughout the book, and not withheld so much information that could have been helpful. I felt for Rory toward the end of the book; he had been trying to help in his own way the entire time, but it felt like his hands were tied in the end. He, honestly, was one of my favorite characters.

I was a little upset about Beth. Not her character, she was a great character, but her position within the story; a catalyst for Conor to repeat the “mistakes” of his father. It annoyed me more that both Conor and Beth were both seventeen, though I admit that the sex scene between them was vague and non explicit.

The whole McNabb family, along with Drake, were interesting villains, and their connections to Piasa was really interesting. The two younger boys seem to go through hell and back, but it seems deserved to a certain level. The experimentations done on them were horrible, and they got what they deserved in the end.

I gave this book three out of five stars because of the fact that I knew I could have simply put this book down, and not come back. I also have no interest in continuing the series.
