ARA Review by Chaotic_Reading of Demonslayer

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

In Demonslayer: Book 1, after finding out his sister is sick, Spirit joins an underground fighting ring. He then learns of a cure, but the only way to get it is for him to join the Vanguard. Willing to put his own life on the line for his sister, Spirit joins, and there he meets a ragtag group of young people who ultimately become his team and friends.

I really enjoyed this book. I wasn’t sure what to expect since a few of the OBC recommendations have been let downs, but this book did not disappoint! The cast of characters is great and diverse (Iggy and Tala are my favorites), the world and how magic is used is unique, and the plot of an ongoing struggle between humans and demons was interesting. The fact that the demons have their own society, and aren’t just mindless killers, was intriguing. I am excited to see where Astaroth’s character goes in the rest of the series.

The bond that Spirit and Emily have is amazing. Both of them are dedicated to the other, and are willing to do just about anything to make sure the other lives. Emily’s sacrifice at the end, though shocking, was perfect. The way she seemed to easily master her own magical abilities to save Spirit, who was attempting to do the same for her. I love their relationship.

Spirit and the rest of the group — Tala, Skylar, Dimitri, Amelia, and yes, even Meiko — are quite the team, and I can’t wait to see how they come together once they really have a chance to train and learn from one another.

I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars because not only did it feel new and different from a lot of the other magic user books I have read, but because I became invested! I couldn’t put the book down, and read large chunks of it at a time. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys magic and unique perspectives, siblings who love one another and are willing to sacrifice themselves for the other, and found family. I am excited to read the rest of this series.
