ARA Review by Donna Sundblad of Medieval Gwennic and other Creatures of Corfe

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

Medieval Gwennic and Other Creatures of Corfe is a captivating adult fairytale that blends intrigue and imaginative fantasy imbued with historical elements and delivered by a dependable narrator. Set in the tumultuous year of 926, the novel drops readers into a richly detailed medieval world centered around Corfe Castle, where magic, mystery, and suspense dominate the narrative.

At the heart of the story, Gwennic is a young maiden gifted with magical potential but loses her mentor before she is trained how to use it. She is tasked with a secret mission to protect the undisclosed heir to the throne living at Corfe Castle, but before she gets there, her village is ravaged by pugs and destroyed. These menacing creatures with orc and gremlin characteristics like strength, size, green hides, and frog-like eyes add a unique twist to the story's antagonistic force adding a fascinating backstory that enriches their role as villains.

The narrative surpassed my expectations. It excels in creating a suspenseful mood without resorting to graphic violence. Instead, the author focuses on psychological tension and emotional impact, crafting scenes that evoke a sense of dread and uncertainty. This approach kept me engaged throughout the compelling character-driven storytelling.

Author John Parten’s setting of Corfe Castle and its surrounding world is brought to life with a deft touch. The details of the medieval backdrop integrate seamlessly into the plot, providing a vivid yet unobtrusive canvas for the unfolding drama. The story’s pacing is brisk, blending action with engaging dialogue to keep the pages turning.

A special mention must go to Kippers the cat whose inconspicuous presence and insights cat lovers will appreciate. The novel’s charm is amplified by its subtle humor and creative storytelling, which contrasts effectively with the darker elements of the plot.

Overall, Medieval Gwennic and Other Creatures of Corfe is an entertaining and imaginative read. Its blend of fairytale-like elements, psychological suspense, and richly developed characters make it a standout in the genre. Whether you’re drawn to historical fantasy or enjoy a well-crafted fantastical tale, this book is sure to captivate and delight. I’m happy to give it 5 out of 5 stars.
