ARA Review by Devendra Sonwani of The Deserving

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

The Deserving by Efren O’Brien is a wonderful tale that beautifully depicts the resilience of humankind and the faith within them. As O’Brien narrates the story, readers cannot help but fall in love with the protagonist, who is on a journey of reliving and redefining himself. The narrative is both moving and compelling, promising surprises as the conundrum of the protagonist's life unfolds. Through vivid storytelling, O’Brien crafts a world that is as thought-provoking as it is relatable, making The Deserving a standout read.

The protagonist, portrayed as an anti-hero, struggles against an unrelenting society while inhabiting a universe meticulously created by O’Brien. The author blends fictional elements with realistic portrayals, presenting a protagonist who feels like an everyman—a reflection of the reader themselves. Each fragment of the story is intricately woven into a seamless narrative, guiding readers through a world of complex characters and profound emotions. The story compels readers to question societal norms and values while exploring the essence of redemption and the significance of second chances.

The Deserving also stands out for its deeper themes. It doesn’t just lay out a narrative but provides a strong message about perseverance and staying rooted even in times of emotional vulnerability. O’Brien raises thought-provoking questions about who truly deserves redemption and how societal values play into this determination. The themes of hope and strength resonate throughout, making this book not just a story but an experience that stays with the reader long after the final page.

4.5 out of 5. The near-perfect rating reflects the brilliance of O’Brien’s storytelling and the emotional depth he brings to his characters. However, one minor flaw is that parts of the story may feel predictable to seasoned readers of this genre. While this predictability slightly detracts from the suspense, it does not diminish the overall impact of the book. The emotional richness and relatability of the characters more than make up for this small shortcoming.

In conclusion, Efren O’Brien’s The Deserving is a deeply engrossing read. It weaves life’s simplest virtues into a powerful narrative while addressing universal themes of humanity and hope. For those seeking inspiration, reflection, or just a heartfelt story, this book delivers on every level. It is a must-read for anyone looking to explore the resilience of the human spirit and the beauty of second chances.
