ARA Review by Peter Bellone of The Criminals
The Criminals - A time to reap This is book two of a three-book series, with book three still in progress.
The story centers on two criminal organizations that are at war with each other. The Mexican drug mob, whose leader, Juan Delgado, has just been blown to bits on his yacht, leaving the care taking of this organization, to an aging Mr. Ricardo Sanchez, who is the mob’s fixer.
The opposing organization is the Black Gansta Organization (BGO) who are the drug, and prostitution rivals of the Mexican mob, and who operate out of the Los Angeles area, while encroaching upon established mod territory throughout the USA.
The story begins at the funeral of Mr. Delago, and pivots between various BGO member and Mrs. Delago and her twin son. These twins have just come into millions of dollars because of their father's death, and display a great deal of arrogance toward Mr. Sanchez, , even though they are unschooled what their father actually did for a living.
While Mr. Sanchez is responsible for keeping this mob functioning. He also has the responsibility for retribution on their rivals, as well as bringing the twins up to speed as to their new found place within the mob. The twins each exhibit a Sado-masochistic personality, as they kill their mother's lover by chopping him to pieces, and then urinating on the body. They escape justice because of who they are, and the Mexico City police chief, who is in the mob's pocket. Therefore, they are brandished from this city and are transported to Los Angeles, where they are to learn the way of the mob.
There is an aborted attempt by the mob to destroy a BGO Whore house by killing all its occupants during a planned assault. However, because the madam coincidentally has a 357 pistol with her at the time of the actual assault, she kills two of the invaders because of their stupidity, even though these invaders are trained insurgents. Killing these two attackers causes a setback of the mob’s plans to destroy the BGO.
The story ebbs and flows around several characters and their interaction between each other, and where they fit within the mob or the BGO, who seem to be of no consequence, but are members of the BGO, and have some concern for the mob’s efforts to destroy them.
The story twists and turns as each character is introduced, producing a mini-story with each introduction, then turning toward the bigger picture of what is happening within each organization and why.
I gave this story a rating of four out of five stars My reasoning is this: While the story seemed to flow in an orderly direction, it would have been helpful to flush the story with vignettes from the first book, speaking to the reason for actions that were taken, but never explained, leaving the reader wondering why. There also seemed to be a disorganization of purpose that got lost when introducing the vast selection of characters. The story ends abruptly as the twins are transported to LA, leaving the reader shocked that there was no warning of this abrupt ending.
This character, Mrs Delago, is not relative to the story line. While being paranoid about her sons, and their wellbeing, she is disinterested in them and their life stye, nor is there any emotion when she finds out that it was her sons that killed her young lover. The story would not have been negatively affect if her charater was introduced to flush out the story.
