ARA Review by Jamie Lee Carrie of The Cruel Romance

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

THE CRUEL ROMANCE by Marina Osipova is a story that starts in the midst of a harrowing scene.
In a small town outside of Moscow, the main character Sarafima sends the man she loves, Vitya, away to join the ranks of those at the front lines during WW2.

In true historical fashion, Germans take over her village to include the home she shares with her mother. They are expected to sleep outside in the cold barn while using their precious wood and meager winter supplies for the cruel German’s comfort. This leaves the women to live in harsh conditions, but enduring and overcoming is something these strong characters are committed to.

The story follows the life of Sarafima as she struggles in a country where food, safety, and equal job opportunities are not common. The details of her suffering and her ability to adapt and forge ahead are remarkable, and I found myself cheering her on.

I have rarely read a book this engrossing. Osipova paints pictures with an unmatched—and yet not too frilly—use of the English language. Her ability to garner words with such precision is astonishing and delightful. The characters are all well developed and relatable, and her descriptions allow the reader to form their own personal picture of each scenario and get lost in them. Her style can only be compared to some of the world’s literary great masters. Although there is one part that was especially heartbreaking, the details surrounding the dreadful accurance were tastefully worded and kept to a minimum.

This talented writer kept me engaged from start to finish with exceptional historical value and unforseen lovely twists. This is a welcome look at resiliance and human strength after trauma and damage caused by war. It shines a light on forgiveness, unexpected love, and survival. Every aspect is touching as she successfully introduces the viewpoints from each of the main characters. Osipova is a gifted storyteller, and she writes with a beautiful rhythm and flow, drawing the reader in. I enjoyed the characters, the plot, and the ending, and I found the editing superb. As an American, I really loved the history retold in this way.

I award this book five out of five stars, and I certainly look forward to reading more of this author's work! I already find myself suggesting it to other adult readers, even though this is not my normal genre. I am so glad I picked this one up. BRAVO!
