‘TO SIR WITH LOVE’ written by is not a fiction. It’s written on author’s own true experience as a teacher in a school in eastern London in .
In this very touching book, the author explains that he was born and raced in British Guyana. Then he comes to England as a young adult, gets a very good education and joins British Air Force. His problems start when he leaves the Air Force. Despite his sound educational background and military experience, no one gives him a job, just because he is a black person. After so much hassle, he finally manages to get himself appointed as a teacher in a school in eastern England.
His problem of finding employment is solved now, only to lead him to new problems and challenges. The school to which he is appointed is not a traditional one, but one that emphasizes on student’s self discipline. Almost all the students are from a poverty stricken, poorly educated social back ground that they have many emotional behavioral problems. At first, Braithwate’s students treat him with a very cold and some times hostile manner. But he slowly and smoothly finds his way in to their hearts, some times being friendly and flexible, and sometimes being strict and firm. Some times he even goes beyond the boundaries of his duty to help them. He teaches them not only their curriculum, but also how to behave like decent adult citizens in society.
The beauty of this book is that the author has been able to put his experience in to words in the same fine manner that he approached his students in. This is a very good read for any body who hopes to become a teacher.
