Through the main character, Avery Jannsen, Kim Toornburg's book "Not Your Exit" explores the sad and sometimes scary world of mental health. Avery has a special supernatural talent that lets her feel other people's suicidal thoughts. This choice of story makes the reading experience very touching and real.

The author creates a powerful main character right from the start, and the story is just as complex. Not only does Avery's journey help her understand her supernatural abilities, but it also helps her deal with the heavy load they put on her shoulders. The author's choice to write in the first person is especially effective because it pulls readers right into Avery's problems and achievements.

Finn's character shows how important it is to have help and understanding when dealing with mental health problems. Love and strength can win even when things look very bad. His bond with Avery is a touching example of this.

One of the best things about the book is how directly it deals with issues like mental illness and death. The author writes about these issues in a way that is sensitive and realistic, making the writing both educational and emotional.

The book does, however, have some problems with its pace. There are parts of the story, mostly in the middle, where it seems to get confused too much by everyday life details that, while they add to the characters' lives, slow down the story a bit.

Also, the supernatural parts of Avery's dreams are interesting at first, but they become a bit excessive as the book moves on. But these visions are an important part of the story and give the book a unique style.

The last part of the book is the best because it gives a thoughtful ending to Avery's journey. Even though some people might think the ending is too easy, it is encouraging and stays true to the story's hopeful tone. It supports the idea that the fight against mental health problems is hard but not impossible with the right help.

The writing is clear and vivid, and the author effectively creates detailed pictures and emotional depth. The dialogue is realistic and moves easily.

The book has been well-edited, I found only a few minor spelling or grammar mistakes. It is important to note that this level of writing makes reading smooth and free of technical errors that could be distracting.

In conclusion, I rate "Not Your Exit" 5 out of 5 stars. It is an important piece of modern fiction, especially in the mental health field. It gives an interesting look at how hard it is to deal with mental illness while also sending a message of hope and strength. Anyone who likes psychological stories with unexpected twists and readers who like books that talk about important social problems should read this one. This book is an intelligent exploration of the complicated subject of mental illness and the struggles that many people go through without anyone seeing them.
