“Tangled Roots” by Shelia Benskin has a deep, spiritual message about God’s power, faithfulness and goodness. Three sisters discover that every female in their family has been living under a devastating curse for generations. No one knows how to break this curse. They seek help from their elderly cousin and embark on a hazardous journey involving their Cherokee ancestors, evil spirits and the occult.
 
Nadine is the eldest sister and a famous actress. She lives a life of luxury, with her own private jet, limousine and designer clothes. She’s led a promiscuous lifestyle, although she is currently in a relationship with her co-star. Dora is a successful businesswoman, but she’s divorced, lonely, and still yearns for her first love. Charlene was adopted as a baby. She harbored a lot of resentment towards her birth mother for giving her up while raising her sisters. Charlene relies on Nadine and Dora to take care of her financially. When their mother dies, the sisters struggle to agree on anything regarding the funeral service and their mother's remains. Cousin Ivy Mae eventually persuades them to do what their mother would have wanted.
 
I appreciated many aspects of this novel. It tells a story of faith, unforgiveness, love, supernatural abilities, racism, ambition and sexual orgies. Each sister has her own successes, traumas and sadness. Ultimately, the novel is about God and all the good that He brings to our lives despite our sins and unfaithfulness. We are His children, and He loves us. The author talks about the unforgiveness of others, ourselves and God. God’s commands are documented clearly in the Bible. He commands us to love one another, forgive one another, have faith in Him, and glorify Him as our creator. If we live by His commands, He will bless us. The journey to break the chains of unforgiveness will be an eye-opener for many readers.
 
I discovered several errors in the book, and it will benefit from another round of editing. That was the only aspect of the book that I disliked. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars because of the errors.
 
The book contains profanity and sexual content. A theme of Christianity is evident throughout the book, and non-Christian readers may be offended. I recommend this book to Christian readers, especially those bound by chains of unforgiveness.
