Review of Navigating the Next Generation: A Guide to Working with Millennials and Gen-Z
“Navigating the Next Generation: A Guide to Working with Millennials and Gen-Z” by Dr. Tracey B. Manuel is an interesting book that guides the older generation on ways to effectively manage millennials and Gen Z in the workplace.
Research and studies have shown millennials and Gen Z quit their jobs due to valid reasons that aren't considered by the older generation. There are reasons such as low pay, lack of good employer-employee communication, insufficient team bonding, micromanagement, and so on. I learned about the concept of employee turnover, including its advantages and disadvantages. I also became familiar with practicing psychological detachment, as it helps one create a balanced home and work life.
I like how simple and easily comprehensible the author’s writing style is. Tracey adequately explains concepts, using sufficient citations for backup. Again, the references included at the end of the book lend credibility to its overall content. The book sufficiently discusses the challenges millennials and Gen Z face with older managers, including ways they can work around them for enhanced productivity. Studies have shown millennials seek respect and personal growth within their work environment. If their workplace prevents them from achieving these, the chances of quitting become high. Hence, it's necessary for managers to learn proper management to ensure retention.
I discovered a negative aspect of the book. The font size is too tiny for my liking, and I had to zoom in at intervals before I could clearly read the text. This greatly affected my overall reading experience. For this reason, I rate it 4 out of 5 stars. I didn't spot any errors, which gives it flawless editing.
I recommend this to managers and employers from the older generations, as the ideas in this book will greatly improve their relationship with the younger generation, especially in the workplace.
