Review of Irrevocable Acts
Anna, Danny, and Mac feel concerned about the climate change crisis. Anna left behind her daughter, Kate, and granddaughter while they were asleep. Faking her death, Anna erased her existence and stole a neighbor’s vehicle. She drives toward New Mexico. She would confront her past at the Four Corners Monument and continue with her secret plans. Danny had refused to speak of his past, which concerned his elderly friend Jackson. Danny claims he is meeting some old friends from his past, and Jackson has his own secret to reveal to his best friend. Mac takes a break from his job as a physics professor and ends his relationship with his girlfriend, Patricia. He flies down the road while high on cocaine and ritalin.
Three days later, Kate meets two police officers, who inform her that they have located Anna’s car. Given that they found the car underwater in Puget Sound, they suspect she may have committed suicide. Kate finds an envelope that shows Anna had planned her disappearance. In a remote cabin, three friends rely on one another. A deadly mistake forty-three years ago devastated Anna, Danny, and Mac. Despite their separation, their lives remained interconnected in mysterious ways. Anna divulges her plan to make an impact to help with the climate crisis. However, Danny and Mac refuse to let her go alone. If they repeat their actions from college, could they walk away unscathed?
Jonnie Hyde’s Irrevocable Acts addresses global warming and pollution caused by corporations that receive endorsements from the government. The character development was exceptional. The details given to each person made it simple to imagine their appearance. While Anna was environmentally conscious, she was far from being a positive role model for her daughter. The truth about how each person dealt with the challenges of their shared history surfaced during their stay in the New Mexico cabin. Revealing what happened and the guilt each person felt was done in vivid detail. The unpredictable plot brings the views of Anna, Danny, and Mac into focus.
I wouldn’t change anything about this intriguing novel. I enjoyed the engaging conversations as each person recounted how they dealt with the emotional turmoil. The transitions between each person’s perspectives was effortless. I’m giving Irrevocable Acts five out of five stars. The suspense starts on the first page and intensifies. The bittersweet ending provided a realistic depiction of the protestors taking action without considering the consequences of their actions.
Fans of historical fiction that includes current changes in the environment will enjoy Irrevocable Acts. Hyde crafted a few explicit scenes that left the details to the imagination of potential readers. Some people may find certain instances of profanity offensive. Several topics will cause personal reflection on what can be done to preserve the environment for future generations.
