Review of Stages of Life of a Good Man
Stages of Life of a Good Man by Bo Lanzi tells the story of Sal (Salvatore Michael Marese). Raised in a family of Italian origin, Sal has some bad experiences during his school years due to abusive teachers, as well as other unpleasant events that will help shape his character. After demonstrating his love for sports, Sal marries Donna, becomes a father, and starts his working career. After he retires, he meets Sarah, a Holocaust survivor, who will have a powerful influence on him and his thoughts.
This book has a lot to say and will make many readers think. Lanzi's message (that we all can and must make the world a better place) will make many people open their eyes. However, some readers may dislike that the book is anti-Trump, as well as touching on other sensitive issues that need to be addressed (such as the Holocaust that Sarah witnessed) but that not everyone can approach with an open mind. I find this book very interesting, but I must warn you that it may not be for you if you are unwilling to accept opinions other than your own.
I do not like that Sal's life, the subject of the first four chapters (more or less half the book), is told succinctly before he meets Sarah. It is evident that this happens because the main topic is Sal's "awakening" (as the author defines it) after he has retired, but I do not like such a way of telling things. However, I appreciate that the author points out Sal's most significant experiences because this offers some psychological insights that would have been lost otherwise.
Finally, I would add that the book is very well-edited, and apart from some flaws, I did not find any significant typos.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars for the reasons I explained. I recommend this book to those who are interested in social and contemporary issues and who have an open mind to discuss them, or at least to reflect on them without feeling offended, because the message that the author offers is of vital importance, especially in times like the ones we are living in.
