“The Black and White of it,” a book by Kelvin Atkinson, discusses the life of the author, right from childhood into adulthood. Kelvin loves his dad deeply, and after his death, he experiences extreme bouts of depression and begins counselling. His venture into politics is one rollercoaster of a ride, and there are lots of lessons to learn from his experience, including the good and bad.

Kelvin’s journey entails lessons learnt in politics, and readers get to learn that it isn’t as a result of luck, but due to hard work, staying true to the values of one’s party, and representing voters’ wants and needs. This book is a deep introspection into the author’s life, one faced with challenges, triumphs, and victories. Kelvin experiences bullying as a teen, which he believes is as a result of him being gay. However, he learns to stand up for himself in the process.

I find it brave that the author is able to tell his life story and even braver when he comes out clean about his sexuality, even while in politics as a senator. His entrepreneurial spirit drives him to open a successful business named ‘The Urban Lounge,’ though it generates jealousy among neighbouring businesses. Atkinson’s story is a true story of resilience and determination to succeed. There are lots of life lessons readers will get to learn from his experience.

I found no negatives in this book. Its formatting is superb, and it contains only a minor error. For this, I would award it a 5 out of 5 stars rating. In addition, the plot is well-structured, and it boasts of excellent storytelling.

This book is recommended to readers interested in politics and business, as the author’s experience gives a general idea of how they work. Again, it is ideal for gay couples, as they’ll get to read about the experiences encountered in some relationships and also learn lessons from it.
