Last-Second Decision by Keith Pemberton was a suspenseful fiction book full of action-packed scenes and exciting plot lines. I rate this exciting read a 3 out of 5.

Inspector Gage Pemberton is a police officer for St. Christopher and Nevis, his home in the Caribbean. He’s one of ten officers, along with ten soldiers from the Defense Force, sent to help the struggling people in Haiti. Of course, things don’t go as planned. Inspector Pemberton finds himself fighting for not just his wee-being, but the well-being of the men he’s in charge of. Something I noticed immediately while reading this was how the author did such a quality job conceptualizing the characters; they all had their own unique personalities and characteristics that made them interesting. I especially enjoyed Gage Pemberton’s wife, Sasha, because she was exceptionally relatable and emotional. The relationships between characters were full of depth and complexity, which made the entire story much more realistic and fascinating.

This is a pretty graphic book, so I wouldn’t suggest anyone under the age of eighteen read this without parental approval. There is intense violence, constant use of profanity, and sexually explicit scenes depicted within the pages of Last-Second Decision. I found the author wrote about these subjects tastefully; nothing was unnecessarily gory or written strictly for shock purposes. Everything added to the story and captured the brutality of the situation in Haiti. As for the sexual content, I felt it added intimacy and chemistry to the relationship between Gage Pemberton and his wife, Sasha.

I did find mistakes within this book, mostly pertaining to proper punctuation and grammar. I got the impression that English isn’t the author’s first language because of the strange way some phrases were worded. The writing also seems to switch between first person and third person, which is slightly confusing and makes the story harder to follow. I felt this could’ve been better edited, but I still enjoyed the book for the most part. I deducted two stars from my rating because of the number of mistakes and the occasional confusion caused by the strange wording in this novel.

Overall, Last-Second Decision by Keith Pemberton was exciting and intense. I would recommend this book to any adult who enjoys action-packed novels full of suspense, complex characters, and well-constructed storylines.
