Due to the lust-filled acts that led to conception, it made me less able/inclined to feel happy for the characters when they learned they were expecting. An unintended or accidental pregnancy does little to propel genuine feelings of cohesive joy for the main players. If it had simply been a developing romance that resulted in readers rooting for a romantic conclusion baby, the announcement could have produced a far different effect.

That's what you call romance. This usually happens between two lovers..

Your comment made me smile, I hadn't seen, or thought of this instance in that perspective.

When dealing with romance, crime and adventure, it is difficult to avoid sex content. It advances the plot as well as bringing light moments for catharsis. Some explicit content though lack decency and moral values especially when expressed with a tone of approval! That just spells what kind of a writer that author is.

I think the subject in the thread 'Is Sex really necessary?" is a forbidden taboo, we often refrain from commenting openly; though Writers do smart justice to accommodate such. They frame the such unavoidable situations in a rightly crafted sober prose. There are few books went right with the moderate diction of sensitive details without profanity.

When they were in Zona and under environmental influence, I accept that there was sex among the members of the expedition. In the beginning, when Irina basically throws herself at Grant, that seemed cheap to me, undermining the following influence of Zona.

“Irina stared at him in disbelief. “I think something in the air like pheromones or hormones are making us all, except you, more emotional—angry, happy, horny….”

I think the point of the excessive sexual activity is that there was something in the environment that was magnifying their normal emotional responses. Like the day it started raining and everyone ran out into the rain totally nude in a state of euphoria to take a shower.

I have Parkinson’s Disease and one of my medications is Miramax. A side effect of that drug is that it magnifies anything you are compulsive about – sexual addiction, gambling, drinking. People on this medication have gambled away everything they own. It is rare – but it happens. Fortunately, my compulsion is cleaning my house. I literally cannot stop thinking about cleaning my house. But I have enough self-discipline I could control it – it doesn’t control me. I think that should be the minimum expectation of a group of scientists on a mission – they should be focused 100% on the mission. I would have been so scared of the saber tooth lions, the last thing I would be thinking of is sex!

Sex is a basic necessity and it is natural. There is nothing unreal if a book portrays sex in the story. I would totally disagree with the fact that it does only to grab the attention of the readers. But going by the book, the circumstances were not appropriate to have pleasure where Grant was in a mission to find his uncle, it is morally wrong, but I do not find any logical reason for not having sex.

Yes, it seemed like he had a whole lot of other things to do and think of

It is better for an adventure book to contain more adventure, than other things

I wholeheartedly second your opinion. While there was at least an arousal stimulus present that could account for the romps, it was presented in a way that I found undesirable and distracting. It is the primary reason I didn’t get a 4-star feel in the end.
The author shows a fair reason for its inclusion, yet it seems too much for the book

Yes, there was no actual romance, only the lust
