Your comment made me smile, I hadn't seen, or thought of this instance in that perspective.Stephanie Elizabeth wrote: ↑08 Jul 2020, 19:07 While I don't think it was necessary for the book, the author obviously thought it was. I was surprised that with all Grant had going on that he actually had time to think about sex!

I think the point of the excessive sexual activity is that there was something in the environment that was magnifying their normal emotional responses. Like the day it started raining and everyone ran out into the rain totally nude in a state of euphoria to take a shower.
I have Parkinson’s Disease and one of my medications is Miramax. A side effect of that drug is that it magnifies anything you are compulsive about – sexual addiction, gambling, drinking. People on this medication have gambled away everything they own. It is rare – but it happens. Fortunately, my compulsion is cleaning my house. I literally cannot stop thinking about cleaning my house. But I have enough self-discipline I could control it – it doesn’t control me. I think that should be the minimum expectation of a group of scientists on a mission – they should be focused 100% on the mission. I would have been so scared of the saber tooth lions, the last thing I would be thinking of is sex!

It is better for an adventure book to contain more adventure, than other thingsMaconstewart wrote: ↑08 Jul 2020, 19:33 Although I believe sex to be a natural part of our lives, I do believe we have evolved beyond our base urges controlling us. I tend to lose interest in books with too much sexual detail. I know how it's done, I do not need a play by play detailing of it.

The author shows a fair reason for its inclusion, yet it seems too much for the bookAvidBibliophile wrote: ↑08 Jul 2020, 23:01I wholeheartedly second your opinion. While there was at least an arousal stimulus present that could account for the romps, it was presented in a way that I found undesirable and distracting. It is the primary reason I didn’t get a 4-star feel in the end.diana lowery wrote: ↑01 Jul 2020, 13:51 I think that the sex component was the science fiction element because it was caused by the hormone-producing plant that caused them all to be aroused and fertile. I don't think it was necessary to the story; I think it was annoying.

Yes, there was no actual romance, only the lustAvidBibliophile wrote: ↑08 Jul 2020, 23:08 Due to the lust-filled acts that led to conception, it made me less able/inclined to feel happy for the characters when they learned they were expecting. An unintended or accidental pregnancy does little to propel genuine feelings of cohesive joy for the main players. If it had simply been a developing romance that resulted in readers rooting for a romantic conclusion baby, the announcement could have produced a far different effect.

That is correct. But you don't have to always give in for your feelingsFlorence Nalianya wrote: ↑09 Jul 2020, 00:34 Yes to some extend it is, such thing come natural and nobody should go against the laws of nature.
