Official Review: Sleight of Mind 1: Crashing the Party

[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Sleight of Mind 1: Crashing the Party" by Max Guernsey, III.]

Daniel Vaughn is send on a mission his comrades think it is to decipher ancient cuneiform texts but the mission is not what it seems this is what you learn from the authors synopsis. In fact you are supposed to guess this information throughout the book. I had to refer to synopsis in order to get the jest of the story.

My impression was the main character is in a mental institution due to a psychotic break. This impression was due to the fact there are large chucks of time missing between chapters and the characters just appear out of thin air. Also the events in the book sound more like hallucinations.

Right from the start of the book I felt like there was something missing which turned out to be the plot of which was almost non-existent.
I found the story confusing due to the fact it did not mesh together also parts of the story where not well thought out.

The characters have less depth than a sheet of paper, and there is no background or real plot to the story. Due to the characters lack of background I had little vested interest in their survival. The action sequence left me baffled.

The lack of a plot made it quite difficult at times to make any real sense of what is actually happening. It could be interesting if it was a lot more developed and the story was filled in. I was actually quite pleased it was only seventy pages long.

My rating would have to be 2 out of 4. While this book has an interesting premise, it failed to deliver. Even though I love good Science Fiction & Fantasy I fear this isn’t one of them.
