Review of The Secret Society of Old Saint Nicks
Divorce is said to be harder on kids, but I was happy that Trey took his family situation well in the book, The Secret Society of Old Saint Nicks by V. K. Summer. This book is a children's storybook that tells the tale of Santa Claus and how he makes Christmas a joyful time for children.
Trey's parents were divorced. While his mother was remarried, his father was not. Luckily, his stepfather was a good man whom he appreciated. However, he still missed those times his family was whole. Christmas was a wonderful time for them, as his mother ensured that everything went as perfectly as possible. So even though his parents were divorced, they still got to spend time with his dad during Christmas. This very year, he was to fly out alone to meet his dad first, and then the twins would come with their mother later. It was during this stay that he had the most wonderful adventure experience with his dad. They went on an adventure that involved meeting magic beings and experiencing extraordinary things, and this brought them even closer. How does Santa grant children their wishes? This book tells us the answer.
This book was quite interesting. Although it is a children's book, you will find adventure, fun, suspense, and plenty to learn. As Trey and his father, Miles, are qualifying to join SSOSN, you will find yourself racking your brains with them as they solve puzzle after puzzle. You will appreciate the supernatural scenario they find themselves in and find joy in their triumphs. You will also get scared with them as they encounter bizarre things. That's how emotionally engaging this book was.
The only thing that got me negatively thinking was Trey's thoughts about the original Santa referring to a Big Guy. He wondered if maybe Santa believed in the existence of a God or a creator. This got me thinking that that information sounded abstract and conflicted with the theme of the book. Aside from this, there was nothing else I had a problem with in the book. It was also not significant enough to affect my rating.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I removed a star because of the errors I encountered while reading. I appreciate this book for its sense of adventure, magic, and good cheer. It would serve well as bedtime stories for children of all ages. Adults can also read it if they appreciate a book with a light and interesting theme. Since it's about Christmas, Christians and those who celebrate the holiday would appreciate the book too.
