Review of Mi-Ai
M. S. Jhita's "Mi-Ai" blends an adventure and criminal novel in a science fiction environment, showing the reader a world where artificial intelligence (AI) robots are so sophisticated that they are given to every human as a life companion. The 'Mechanical Interface Artificial Intelligence Initiative' (Mi-Ai) is a government initiative in which humans are born with an 'Intelligence Memory Box' (IMB) that contains all of their education and knowledge. And, on their 11th birthday, the IMB is incorporated into a human-shaped robot.
The narrative centers on Nova, a young lady attempting to make sense of her life on her own since, even though her stepfather is a wealthy man who runs an important organization, she never asks for his help, no matter how bad things get in her life. And because of her desperate pursuit for a better life, she takes on any risky or illegal work she can find, which is how she eventually discovers an abandoned IMB without realizing the challenges and suffering that it will get her.
The story is presented from the point of view of different characters, which made the story more interesting as it gave the reader a connection with the characters and a better understanding of their emotions and motivations.
For instance, we learn about the story from the perspective of Detective Watts, a lawful man with serious personal issues that could influence how he handles the criminal investigation where Nova is a part of. I thought it was great that, in contrast to other crime books, the reader is given a glimpse into the detective's motivation for arresting Nova from the moment of her first arrest. This allows readers to comprehend the acts, which, despite their evil nature, are incredibly relatable and human.
The story is even told at times from the perspective of an Ai unit, and it was very interesting to understand how these robots could understand the world around them and how they made their decisions when they didn't really have emotions to guide them like humans do.
The amazing relationship between humans and Ai units got me thinking about how many advantages it would be for people to have an Ai in their lives to keep them company. I believe that no one will ever be alone or have to deal with challenges without the support of another independent, logical voice.
The author has created a very admirable world that, although fictional, is also very relatable, describing social and economic problems that even a world with advanced technology could struggle with. It also describes how a world with advanced technology is not free from problems of corruption, unemployment or criminal activity.
Overall, this is a very good read, especially for those who love science fiction and crime fiction. And because the author has created an amazing world and his characters are very complex and relatable to the reader, I have decided to give this book 4 out of 5 stars. I deducted one star due to problems with the editing of the book, I found some grammatical errors, redundancies and some scenes were a little hard to follow completely, like the fight scenes for example. As for the age rating, it contains strong language and violent scenes that would make it more suitable for teens and adults.
