Can souls experience quantum entanglement? Is reincarnation actually quantum entanglement?

As the novel Our Future Selves by Graham Dix unfolds, this entanglement creates chaos. Zak and Sarah find their lives inexplicably joined. Zak was born in 2007. Sarah was born in 2116. Yet they find their conscious selves switching bodies and souls. Zak inhabits Sarah's body in the future while Sarah simultaneously inhabits his. At around age four, Zak and Sarah begin randomly switching places at the oddest times. Imagine you are preparing to run a race, only to find yourself taking a bubble bath in the future—in someone else's body. Or you are preparing to fly your gyro, only to suddenly find yourself surrounded by gang members in the past. Zak's frightened family leans toward a medical diagnosis of schizophrenia to explain these bizarre occurrences. Zak must be crazy—there is no other explanation for the sudden changes in his voice, mannerisms, and knowledge. Meanwhile, Sarah's mother is more accepting of this phenomenon, whereas her father refuses to acknowledge it.

As Zak approaches twenty, he is presented with a new idea. Carmen, whom he meets in an online dating chat, is not repulsed by Zak's oddities but is instead curious to learn more. What if it is not schizophrenia but quantum entanglement? What if Sarah is real? What if Zak could learn to control when they switch? Could he retrieve information from the future to change the past?

The book is well-written, quick-paced, and features a unique story. The complicated subject of time jumps could have made the writing seem disjointed, but the author did a great job of including necessary details, even marking each chapter title with the date. After the first few chapters, I found the timeline easy to follow. The book's premise was unusual, and I enjoyed the surprising twists and turns of the plot, earning Our Future Selves a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. However, the mature content felt unnecessary at times and detracted from the story. Because of this, I believe it diminished the overall quality and limited the audience.

As a science fiction novel blending fantasy and time travel, it delves into the realm of the weird and unexplained. For a reading experience off the beaten path, give Our Future Selves a try.

I would recommend this book only to adults due to language and sexual content.
