Motherhood is a blessing and a curse at the same time. It brings about pride and comes with a different form of maturation. Not all children are the same. Some are very easy to deal with, others, it will only take a miracle for them to be tamed. Most often, it's not about what the mother is doing wrong, but rather the environment in which they find themselves. For example, there was no father figure in Kalayla's life. That can be a factor for her rebellion. Mostly it's single parents who suffer the most because the other partner is absent and not in the picture so it puts all the pressure on the existing one. At times the weight gets too heavy, unbearable and the frustration is released onto the kids. Or the child might be going through something personally, and with no one to share the problem with who can relate, it then manifests in their actions. The questions that arises after can only be answered after critical analysis of the situation. It might be it's too late there's no way to fix anything, or just give them time to come around, or try to be in their sight as much as possible even if they don't want to see you. Better yet, try to realize where you went wrong, maybe your speech might have been offensive or you had no time for them and try to spend as much time as you can making it up to them. Proper communication is important but if none is willing to open up. The relationship won't work. Mothers should be open minded no matter what, a child must be able to relate to their parents on a more personal level, share everything without fear. If these things are put in place, the child going wayward is less likely to occur.

Being a mother is a daily challenge, and being a single parent makes it even harder. One of the hardest things to do is raise a child by yourself. From the context of kalayla, I will say Lena made good efforts to be a mother to kalayla.

But that sacrifices her time with her, which results to Kalayla trying to find herself. One lesson that's clearly given by Lena I that change can come from one person to another. Many mothers, like Maureen in the story, work tirelessly to provide for their children and secure their futures, often sacrificing their own time and well-being in the process. Lena and Maureen were great moms in this book. They did their best for their kids and even if seemed like they didn’t do enough, they were sacrificial.

The theme of motherhood is quite dominant in the book and can majorly be seen in Lena and Maureen. We see Maureen struggle hard to train Kalayla and soak in all her teenage attitude. We also see Lena trying to correct what she failed to do as a mother to her own children. Motherhood is challenging but still beautiful.

Motherhood when prepared for can be a blessing. For example all form of stability which include physical, mentally, emotional and spiritual stability is very necessary. In Maureen insisting on marrying a black against her parents wish already made the mothering process very complicated. Being a good mum requires preparation Lena failed too in that area and I was happy she redeemed her self with Kalayla.

And at every moment, when we look back to the things we have experienced, we can always think of better ways we could have done things. But when one was still in that situation these ideas do not come. It's always like that.

Motherhood is a whole new ball game. There are so many things involved right from conception, to the birth of the child and their upbringing. When a woman is left to raise her child alone or without support from her spouse of family, it becomes really tough. Kalaya just exposes us to just how tough being a mother can be.
