Matthew Tysz has created a world worth knowing. Even though fantasy isn't my first choice in genres, I loved the book. It's free-flowing, captivating and so enthralling! An inescapable 4 star read!

I loved the plot build-up for Meldorath and all the other details that are put in place on purpose. There's nothing I particularly disliked about the book. The characters are all well-shaped and distinct. Would love to read the remaining logs of the series.

10 errors! Wow! I found only 3 and were very minor. I thought it was edited excellently

This is just another book which resurrects ones interest in Fantasy genre. The book beautifully establishes a magical world full of different creatures both humans and supernatural. I fell for the plot as well as setting. The coherrence on writing, the pace of story, the characters development, everything is perfectly put together. I admire the author's crafty writing style and beautiful presentation. In short, I LOVE THIS BOOK.

I rated the book three out of four stars, mainly because it is not really a stand alone book: it is an introduction to the next volumes, so some characters are just mentioned "en passant", and I had the feeling they were kept for later.
Also there are soo many characters and places and objects that are unfamiliar that my head got spinning with trying to remember them all so I could proceed with the reading. Perhaps it would have been better if the Glossary had been placed at the beginning.

I rated the book four out of four stars and my favourite part of the book is Galen's uncle advice to him. Galen's innocence to how the world works outside the lands of the princes also got me. I would surely recommend it to others. But what I didn't like about it was it's slow pace after the initial excitement.

I think this book deserves a 4 out of 4 star rating. The characters were well developed as the plot is intriguing. I especially loved the wisdom of the emperor in order to avoid an overthrow by his sons.

I found it an absolute page-turner and I've rated it 4 out of 4 stars. I'm excited to read more from this series. The author did a great job of bringing the characters alive. I'd recommend it to the ones who enjoy a good fantasy series.
The book to read is not the one that thinks for you, but the one which makes you think.

This book reminds me of Game of thrones, and that why I love it. For this part, the story revolves around characters and plots. The death of a character will not bring an end to the book. It just continues.

I rated this book 3 out of 4 stars. I agree with others who have said that this book didn't feel like a complete novel or story in its own right. It was really more of a prologue to the actual rest of the series. As a result, the pacing felt really slow and plodding at times. And then the climax comes out of nowhere and then sprints off into the distance, wrapping up just as quickly.

I gave this book 3 out of 4 stars. I absolutely loved the author's style of writing; the story progressed as if I were watching a film thanks to Tsyz' use of detail and imagery. I think the battle scenes were done really well and it was quite impressive how he managed to build such a colorful world full of lore and magic with tons of major players with their own agendas. However, I felt that at times it was becoming confusing to have so many characters. I was surprised when I read the chapter name with a brand new character and I was already 3/4ths of the way through the book. I totally understand that this book is meant to be an introduction so it's bound to be confusing but there was so much new information that it was difficult for me to keep track of who was from which city, belonged to which army, etc. I think it would have been better to focus on maybe only the main characters in this first book or made the book longer to really flesh out each a little more. I also agree with some comments above that I wish Galen had played more of a role in the core power struggle. Otherwise, it's still a great read and I would still be interested to pick up the next one in the series!

I gave it 3 stars because I found more than ten errors, but I really enjoyed the story and thought it was a great first book for the series.

You know I'm really interested on Marshus' character. I'm halfway done reading it, so I'm excited to see how his character together with his father develops their character. Congratulations to Mr. Tysz for having been written this wonderful book.

I found the book interesting and very easy to read that is why I rated it 3 out of 4 stars. What I liked most about it is how well-thought-out the world of Voulhire is. On the other hand, what I liked least is how confusing the jargons were for me even though the author thoughtfully included a reference guide.

It was a great book, I especially liked the character of Meldorath, an overpowered mage with ambitions who will crush anyone who'll stand in his way and I am eager to find out what happens to Galen in future. I taged this book 4 out 4 stars.
