Review of Howl of the Banshee
“Howl of the Banshee” by Dave McKeon is the third book in ‘A Lou Gault Thriller Series.’ Even though it's the third book in the series, you can read it as a standalone novel because it gives all the necessary background about the main characters.
Lou Gault is a former elite Joint Task Force Two commando who now runs a remote sportsman’s retreat that he inherited from his grandfather. His wife, Kathryn O'Grady (Kate), is a Royal Canadian Mountie who previously served with the Irish Directorate of Military Intelligence. They both are happily married according to the Abenaki ceremony. But Kate’s Irish family wants them to renew their vows in a Catholic Church in Ireland. And for that they had planned to travel to Ireland together, but at the last moment, Lou had to stay back to oversee some renovation work at his resort. So, Kate had to go ahead of Lou. Little did they know that trouble had been lying in wait for this exact opportunity to find Kate alone and vulnerable.
Our villains, ‘The Triplets,’ consisting of Beatrice, her twin Anne, and their friend Evelyn, kidnap Kate during her solo trip as an act of revenge. A year ago, Kate led an INTERPOL team that successfully brought down an international smuggling ring run by the husbands of these three women. ‘The Triplets’ trick Kate into their trap, drug her, and take her to a remote location, leaving her completely helpless and unable to fight back. They demand a huge ransom from Lou, pushing him into a desperate race against time to save her.
Now, I’ll talk about what I felt while reading the book. The book cover and title gave me a supernatural vibe, but it turned out to be a gripping thriller, full of suspense and twists that kept me on the edge. The characters in the book and their shared bonds were fascinating. Lou and Kate’s love for each other is unwavering. Lou’s cousin Jake played a crucial role in Lou's search for Kate. Their bond and teamwork were very engaging. Beatrice, along with her twin Anne, was an intriguing character. Beatrice is the leader of the trio, smart, calculating, and cunning. On the other hand, Anne seems to struggle with her role in the trio, almost feeling like an outsider.
What I liked most about the book was the way the kidnappers kept changing locations. It added a lot of excitement and made the story more unpredictable. Another thing I really liked was the epilogue. The author made sure we got to know what happened to all the characters in the story, leaving no one behind. It gave the book a peaceful and satisfying ending.
The editing of the book was impeccable. I didn’t encounter a single mistake while reading, and there is nothing I dislike about this book. Overall, it was an engaging and thrilling experience, so I rate this book 5 out of 5.
