Richard March loves to be in control of everything. From his flourishing business to his family matters, he enjoys asserting control. Even his tiny grandson’s choice of toys doesn’t escape his scrutiny. But when he suffers a stroke that leaves him paralyzed, he realizes, in a gruesome way, how helpless he is in front of fate. If you are curious about how the table turned on Richard, read Billy Hanson’s Long Term Damage, where you will find intriguing characters like Richard.

This book is a collection of seven short stories—Fresh Hell, Dolly, Puppies, The Burden, Bad Traffic, It’ll Grow Back, and Corner Booth. These stories are very different from larger-than-life paranormal and fairytale stories. Each explores the darker sides of life and forces the readers to rethink the moments they are living. Because just one mundane decision, one naïve mistake, or one hurried choice can alter their lives forever.

The stories have varied themes but usually start inconspicuously and then take a darker turn unexpectedly. We witness courage, determination, and dedication as well as pride, greed, and heartbreak as the characters face the consequences of their actions and choices. More than often, people become either their best or their worst versions while facing dire situations. 'Puppies' was my favorite among the stories, while 'It’ll Grow Back' really surprised me. 'Bad traffic' has a paranormal hint and differs from the other stories in this book. There are some profanities, and I noticed several punctuation errors, but they did not hamper my reading experience.

There is nothing I disliked about this book. I would rate it 4 out of 5 only because of the errors. The editing could have been better. I recommend this book to mature readers who enjoy books that encourage them to look back at their lives with a fresh, albeit a little darker, perspective.

I enjoy collections of short stories. The theme of accepting loss of control is important because this situation can happen to anyone at any time. We must learn to accept that we should not and need not to have control over everything. Acceptance of this fact of life can bring one peace of mind. For these reasons, I am adding this book to my bookshelves.

Interesting review! First I thought this was a book about Richard. Is Richard's life the overarching theme in all of the stories,or is it one among them?
I usually like stories with a plot twist,which don't necessarily give away the end, but have the reader to figure it out.

I like short or long stories, depending on the genre because I like action, comedy, psychopath and romance genres. So I didn't read this book, but it's a good book to remind us that we can't control other people's lives because it's not good.
