Review of 'The Disciples' by D. Fuller Smith

Post by Sunitha A R »

Narrated in the third person, the novel The Disciple by D. Fuller Smith follows a group of high school boys who become involved in a drug-dealing operation. As they grow older, they face numerous challenges while chasing wealth and attempting to escape their current living conditions.

Set in Kakarot High School in 1998, the story centers on Sam Gonzalez, a high school student, and his friend Carmine Rostintoni. During their junior year, they operate a drug business with several others on Juniper Street. By the summer, the two decide to take over the entire operation. When their senior year begins, they’ve succeeded—they are now the only dealers on the street.

Sam and Carmine establish a strong network of dealers and buyers, whom they refer to as “saps.” As the year progresses, their wealth grows. After graduation, Carmine buys a new place, while Sam moves into Carmine’s former apartment. Carmine tries to launder his money by purchasing a second-hand red Mustang and investing in a legitimate business, which ultimately fails due to his inexperience. The narrative also touches on the uncertainty surrounding the turn of the millennium in the year 2000.

Fuller Smith's narrative style is straightforward and effective, with a strong focus on character development and realistic dialogue. While the plot is compelling and the emotional variety keeps the story engaging, some segments feel slightly prolonged, particularly in the middle chapters. Nevertheless, the pacing regains its footing, and the story concludes with a sense of thematic resolution.

In summary, The Disciple is a well-crafted novel that balances action, emotion, and social commentary. It offers a gripping look at the dangers of chasing quick success through illicit means and the heavy toll it takes on young lives. Though some portions could benefit from tighter editing, the overall impact of the novel is powerful.

I’d rate the book 4 out of 5 stars. So, if you're looking for a short yet compelling read with a strong emotional arc, The Disciple is worth checking out.
