[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Date Farm" by Jack Winnick.]
All was peaceful in the Beverly Hills mall; shoppers were busy shopping, enjoying the entertainers, and minding their own business. This sense of peace suddenly changed when a group of mysterious men set off bombs inside the mall, injuring many. The now-married Lara Edmond and Uri Levin, who were vacationing at Lara’s family farm, were called to help investigate the matter. Once this investigation was over, they were assigned to assist with infiltrating the Chase and Federal Reserve banks because the same terrorist group was after something in one of these buildings. What could they be after? Is it gold, cash, or something else? Pick up a copy of The Date Farm by Jack Winnick to find out.
Mr. Winnick has done an excellent job putting in the research to write this political thriller; this is what I enjoyed most about it. Seeing the teamwork among Homeland Security, the CIA, the FBI, and other investigative organizations gave me a new perspective on what goes into catching bad guys. Jack also mentions that while many parts of the book are fictitious, the hard work and stress these organizations put into finding these people are not. This information made reading the book more fun for me.
I also liked the vivid descriptions of the Caribbean Sea and the yacht. The author described the sea animals, the beautiful Bermuda marina, and the details of the boat so well that I could easily imagine staying on it and vacationing around the Caribbean islands. Even though the events in the book move quickly, the author takes his time to ensure his readers appreciate the beauty of these islands.
If I had one complaint about the book, it would be that I did not see Lara and Uri struggle that much against the terrorists. In one part of the book, the couple gets captured, but they figure out how to escape almost immediately. Perhaps this is due to their experience with this terrorist group; this is the fourth book in the series. However, I did expect the couple to take their time to figure out how to escape.
Despite the one thing I disliked, I still believe this is a great book with excellent attention to detail, relatable and humorous characters, suspenseful action, realistic villains, and cute romance. This book gets the maximum rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Readers who enjoy political thrillers and a little romance would enjoy this book. Even though this book is the fourth book in the series, Jack includes enough details for readers to understand who the characters are; The Date Farm stands well on its own.
