Review of Hard Headed Woman
I was unsure what to expect from Hard Headed Woman by Howard Gimple when I picked it up, but I am pleased that I did. What I got was a pretty interesting and, to put it gently, wild ride! The story starts with the protagonist, Hannah, mourning the loss of her father. To keep it simple, her life is in a bad spot in several unfortunate ways.
You’ll follow Hannah on her journey as she tries to figure out if someone killed her father and who. She will also simultaneously solve another somehow unrelated crime in the meantime. Unfortunately, I found the culprit extremely predictable, and I guessed who it was immediately; however, the drama that went with it was very intense, albeit rushed at the end. In fact, toward the end, I began to notice quite a few typos. It made the ending lackluster and made me want a more thrilling or simply just concise ending. There are several parts of the book where it drones on about unneeded descriptions of places, throwing off the pace a bit.
I found it painfully obvious that the female protagonist was written by a male. A lot of the descriptions, actions, and thoughts of Hannah are not very believable. There were also quite a few parts of the book that felt pretty homophobic.
My favorite things about the book were the, albeit sometimes ridiculous, fights. No matter how out-of-the-blue or outlandish, they were the most entertaining thing in the novel. I also enjoyed the naive mother, Olive. Olive's relationship with her sister was ridiculous but also extremely accurate to all the sisters I have seen in real life. With all that being said, it was still an interesting ride!
I give this book a 3 out of 5. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action, drama, crime, and violence.
