[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Shucked Up" by Leelon Edwards.]
Title: Shucked Up
Author: Leelon Edwards
This is the type of book that will have the reader turning the page with anticipation. I thoroughly enjoyed its warm southern ambience and interesting oyster culling facts. I felt immersed in its atmosphere. The trip to Apalachicola involved our man Drew in his role as a law enforcement escort to Mack, an FDA inspector. Seafood, more importantly, Oyster fishing, has been under the government's eye for a long time and stringent regulations, which will adversely affect businesses in this area and the whole of the Gulf of Mexico area as a whole, will soon come into effect. Whilst in Apalachicola, they will look into three suspicious deaths and get some undercover feedback about the state of the oyster trade.
We meet the overly concerned Mayor and his wife, the sheriff, JJ, and others. While they are there, an enjoyable parallel story happens, adding a lovely dimension to the story. Leelon Edwards brings out the characters' personalities, and the reader gets to know them well.
There are twists and turns, with some amazing scenes at the end. I felt a lot of sympathy for the local fishermen and the impending negative disruption of their livelihoods.
I noticed no grammatical errors, and the book was mainly devoid of extreme profanity, sex and gore. All this was very refreshing. The length of the book was perfect. I recommend it to anyone looking for an enjoyable light read, from older children upwards. I read it in less than two days as it was difficult to put down.
There was nothing to dislike. The prose was good, with the right amount of description. Chapter 24 had some interesting descriptions of how the oysters are farmed. The description of the river, flora, and fauna was very good, and I really got a good sense of the place's atmosphere. It is a good novel that takes your imagination to a different place. I will award it five stars out of five.
