The book is far too long and saturated with phonetic spelling for the different dialects, which makes it hard to read. This is one case where the movie is better than the book.

I have to agree. The movie is better than the book and my all time favorite. I swore i would never read the book until someone gave me both Gone With the Wind and Scarlett as a gift, then I felt obligated. Of course there is much more detail, and things left out of the movie, but I would not read either book again even though I have watched the movie so many times I can quote it by heart!!!!

I have never read the book, but I have seen the movie. I remember watching it in black and white as a child and absolutely loving it. I actually didn't know it was a book until I got a little older and have always wanted to read it! I never got around to it because I was always reading something at that moment, or I just forgot about it. Now that my memory is refreshed, I'm going to start this book soon!

Everything about this book is beyond superlative--vivid characters, settings that live and breathe, but especially Margaret Mitchell's prose. It would be worthwhile for any writer to study her sentences, every one of which flows with living motion, without a single flowery word. One could criticize the liberal use of racially offensive terms and the portrayal of happy slaves, but I would disagree. One cannot judge a classic by today's standards.

I enjoyed reading this book, but I prefer to watch it as a movie. I feel that people have related to the movie much more than to the book. It is a long read and some of it seemed to be quite a difficult story to follow along, but I still enjoyed it.

Gone with the Wind is one of the few books that I have taken the time to re-read over and over again! The sequel disappointed me a bit because it characterized Scarlett so differently from the original.

Gone with the Wind is the best book I've ever read and the only book I gave 5 stars on Goodreads. Whenever I experience a reading slump, I re-read it. It is an ongoing joke between my friends that when someone can't figure out what to gift me, they should get me a copy of Gone with the Wind. But there are some themes of the book that puzzle me to no end, such as can there be any happiness if likes do not marry. Isn't it said that opposites attract? I have long debated this myself but never reach a conclusion. What do you think about this?

i have read this book a few times as it is one of my favorites, and i also read scarlet and loved it as well. but both books are a different telling of the same people. being from the south i can see and smell everything described in detail, and i think the detail is what makes this story such a fun read.

Excellent novel that defines the old Southern family values, struggles, love, lost and hardships

Margaret Mitchel, no doubt churned out a classic in gone with the wind. Classic plot, classic characters, classic setting, this is indeed a classic novel

This book is on my to-read list, I have always wanted to read it as I enjoyed the movie. I know it's never the same the books are usually much better than the movies!

I love the relationship between Scarlett and Gerald. It is so sweet and tender. Both loved each other so much. Gerald knew his girl. I love how Gerald had a rough exterior but was a real softie on the inside. Case in point: I love when Scarlett remembers how he used to spank her when she was a little girl but would give her quarters afterwards. He couldn't stay mad at his little girl for very long. Scarlett was also sweet and patient with him when he got old and senile. So touching.
