Jane Eyre is a bildungsroman, however, I truly believe that the fusion of Gothic elements make it more interesting than it could have been without them. Any thoughts?

Definitely! I’m fascinated by Bertha - have you read The Mad Woman in the Attic? It draws on the idea that Bertha is in fact Jane’s repressed self. It’s brilliant!

Oh wow I’ve never heard that perspective before it sounds really interesting. That’s probably why I like the novel so much it’s dark aspects

The Gothic elements definitely add to its narrative. The building terror inherent with the mystery surrounding Bertha, for example, as well as the entire aesthetic of the book builds upon that tradition.

I agree. "Jane Eyre" owes much of its allure to the incorporation of gothic elements.

I don't remember the details because it has been quite long, but the suspenseful moments leading up to the fire kind of send shivers down my spine.

I have not read Jane Eyre, but I am sure that you are right to credit Gothic elements for some of its interest. I say that because I have had similar experiences with other books (and movies for that matter) and genres. While in some ideal world ideas would stand on their own, the addition of elements that we find fascinating, memorable, or relatable really help a poignant idea to land in our psyches.
