This is an excellent review. The book sounds like it delivers a very important message, and is vocal about issues that are still prevalent today. I love inspiring stories such as this one, and I am sure I will read this book very soon as I am so intrigued. Thank you for your review!

I find it so interesting that Dr. Douglas had to come to America to experience racism. I also find it to be very sad. We are supposed to be the best country in the world yet we can’t even extend common decency to our fellow man. I think this book is going to be very interesting and cannot wait to read it. I am very proud of the fact that despite his treatment he became successful. This was a great review.

I like what Douglas story instills in people. Hope and success even in racial discrimination and poverty. Great review!

What a great review! It takes a very strong person to persevere and reach their goals in the face of adversity. Dr. Douglas, like so many others, came to this country to find the "American dream" but also found the unpleasantness of racial discrimination. I find it so sad that all of God's creatures cannot live in harmony. God made us all equal and so we should treat each other equally! This sounds like a very interesting book!

It's not often that you see a memoir from a member of my region that isn't someone highly important in terms of the global stage, but that doesn't mean that those who write these aren't just as important. That Dr. Douglas chose to write this and to highlight the racism that he encountered at the time and is still present today shows tremendous fortitude and courage.

oaktreehill wrote: 02 May 2019, 19:45 You didn't mention in the review when Dr. Douglas arrived in the U.S. which is 1963 from the book description. Dr. Douglas would have lived through many of the changes to laws targeting racism. I'm sure it's ironic how little has actually changed. I find it interesting that the title includes the words Free Man as opposed to a slave like its 1863 not 1963. This sounds like a book that targets what America wants to believe is the racism of the past yet seems to be present even today.
I totally agree with you. I'm proud of Dr Douglas for persevering to the end.
Omg! Are you a BTS fan?

Nice review. It's abominable that there is still so much racism going around. The fact the the author is straightforward in his writing makes this book all the more intriguing.

This stories looks so emotional. It gives us the insight of how racism in the past is so powerful in educational institution, commmnuinty and the business organization, character here is so hard working humble and honest that he didn’t give up and fight for his determination. It’s so sad to read that Douglas had to grew up without knowing his father, I am so sure that this books will gives lots of inspiration to the people who face the same problem like him. Thanks for the book and the beautiful review

Interesting. I don't usually read memoirs, but this one sounds like it has some important perspectives, and that, from your review, it might read more like a novel than a life story. I'm looking forward to it. Thanks for your review.

It's so sad to hear of one being denied a promotion solely due to their skin colour and ethnicity. Yet this happens everyday. Always good to hear from those with the fortitude to overcome such adversity and succeed.

Wow. I can imagine the descrimination that Douglas went through in that country. To be dinied promotion because of his ethnicity? This shows that racism was taking a lead in tormenting especially African Americans.
