Memoir of a Deserter by Thomas Foster. is a nonfiction about a young man who tries to make his way through a strange and turbulent time in America's history. Questions himself why does a person join the US Army? What is happening in the Army, and what was it like in Afghanistan and Iraq? Americans died and thousands of soldiers walked away from these Wars. Great to-Read

Memoirs are not my thing, so I'll take a pass on this one. Nevertheless, it seems to be a nicely written account and I wish the author much success in finding an appreciative reading audience.

Sometimes, it takes a major life realignment to find one's place in the world. Thomas was one of those people, and he recounts his experiences in this humorous and well-written autobiography. Thanks for the great review!

Thank you for your detailed review! I appreciate how you highlighted Foster's journey of self-discovery and the various influences in his life. His transition from an unfulfilling job to joining the Army seems like a pivotal moment, showcasing his willingness to take control of his future. I also found his friendship with Josh and Lisa interesting, especially how they balanced spirituality with their more rebellious habits. I can understand why Simone felt uneasy about it, and it’s great to see that despite the challenges, she remained loyal. Your mention of the book’s humor and chronological storytelling makes me more intrigued to read it. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!

Today's BOTD is a memoir that details the author's life as a child through his adulthood. Readers will not only find the challenges he faced relatable, but also his resilience and perseverance inspiring. I've added this to my WTR list...it sounds really good! Thanks so much! :-)

Memoir of a Deserter by Thomas Foster is a deep, raw, and honest look at a guy who went from a troubled kid to a soldier—and then made the bold choice to walk away from it all. The book isn’t just about war; it’s about figuring out who you are when everything around you feels messed up.

Foster starts off with a rough childhood, dealing with family drama, bad decisions, and trying to find some kind of direction. He joins the military thinking it might fix things, but instead, he ends up in Afghanistan and Iraq, where he realizes war isn’t what he thought it would be. The way he describes his experiences makes you really think about what soldiers go through—not just the action, but the emotional and moral weight of it all.

The most intense part is when he decides to desert and start over in the Caribbean. He’s basically running from his past while trying to create a new life, but it’s not all sunshine and beaches. The book dives into crime, poverty, and the struggle to find peace in a broken world. It’s not a feel-good story, but it’s real. Foster doesn’t sugarcoat anything, and that’s what makes it hit so hard.

If you like books that challenge how you see the world and make you question things like war, duty, and personal freedom, this one’s worth reading. It’s a powerful story of rebellion, survival, and self-discovery.

I always find first-person accounts of personal experiences like Thomas Foster's to be great. He tells us about his life, from his childhood, to his time in the army, also his period of addiction, and how he managed to overcome it. Good job #BOTD
