George Washington Dealmaker-in-Chief by Cyrus A. Ansary is a fascinating nonfiction book about the life of the first president of the United States of America. The book takes a detailed look at the life of one of the greatest leaders in American history. The facts presented about the life of George Washington are well documented, with detailed footnotes throughout the book. The book begins with a prologue that describes George Washington’s inauguration day in detail. Ansary has included quotes from George Washington from letters that described his emotions during this important day. He has also included statements by people who were there and witnessed Washington in person. The book details Washington’s early life. It describes Augustine “Gus” Washington, George’s father, who died when George was eleven years old. His sudden death created uncertainty for George, who relied on his older half-brother, Lawrence, to take the place of his father in his upbringing. Lawrence was fourteen years older than George and was an officer in the colonial regiment attached to the regular British army. George’s love and admiration for his brother likely drew him to military life.
George was highly intelligent with excellent problem-solving skills. He worked as a surveyor and was a successful leader in the British military before the Revolutionary War. After resigning from the British military, he returned to Mount Vernon and turned it into a thriving business. He had an amazing entrepreneurial spirit. He appreciated the value of owning land and worked to expand Mount Vernon. He also purchased land in several other states. His interests were varied, and he was successful in most of his ventures. The book follows the life of Washington with a particular focus on his life after the Revolutionary War. This includes his contributions to the peace treaty and setting up the framework for the new American federal government and presidency.
I was completely captivated by this book from start to finish. The author described the life of George Washington in amazing detail. Ansary captured details about him that provide insight into the type of person he was. I was fascinated by his early life. This was what I liked most about the book. Readers will learn how he became one of the Founding Fathers in American history. Although he did not have the formal education that he anticipated due to the death of his father, his inquisitive mind and thirst for learning new things led him on the path to remarkable success in so many areas. There was nothing that I disliked about this book.
Readers will be engrossed in the details that led Washington to pursue a life of service to his country. The book includes details about his relationships with other significant figures in American history. For example, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and James Madison are described and quoted from letters in their own words. It was amazing to read the various descriptions people had of George Washington at the time. I was not aware of the details about the dire state of the United States of America directly following the Revolutionary War. George Washington led the country through a desperate economic crisis, set up the framework of the federal government, established the first Presidential Cabinet, and oversaw the organization of the Mint. It was interesting to learn the details about how these established frameworks were initiated. The author included excerpts from historical figures as they debated the most advantageous path for the new nation.
Cyrus A. Ansary is an international lawyer and financier. With his background and education, he provided a unique perspective on the economic issues discussed in the book. His analysis is interesting and informative for readers. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in American history or George Washington. It is an exceptionally well-edited book without any errors. I give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I would not give it any less than a perfect score because it is thoroughly researched and fascinating to read.
