Dragons to Butterflies by Johnnie Calloway is probably one of the best memoirs I have read. In the book, the author recounts their life of abuse when they were little, their struggle and fight with alcoholism and drug addiction from their teenage years to adulthood, and all the tools and the help they had to become a better person and defeat their demons, or their ‘’dragons’’, as the author puts it.

The author is very open about all the things that they went through: the abuse from their father, the guilt over their mother’s death, the alcohol and drug abuse, the stealing, the cheating, the lying, and all the wrong things they did growing up. I think this is very commendable and brave on the author’s part, to be so open in order to help other people who might be going through the same thing or something similar. That was their reason for writing the book, helping others, and I think the author accomplishes this perfectly.

I’m giving the book 4 out of 5 stars. I like the author’s writing style; I think the book is well-structured, and the author was very clear about what they went through and how they dealt with it, the highs and lows, how their relationship with God helped them, how the 12-step program was also beneficial to them, and how psychiatric help was also beneficial. The only reason I’m not giving it 5 stars is because I find several grammar errors that could have been easily spotted in editing.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is going through a rough patch, not only for alcoholics and drug addicts, but also for anyone. The book has a lot of helpful information and teachings on how to deal with life’s lows and how to improve our relationships with ourselves and everyone, especially everyone who has wronged us, and how forgiveness is essential for inner peace.

"Dragons to Butterflies" by Johnnie Calloway is genuinely one of the most powerful memoirs I've read. The author's raw honesty about abuse, addiction, and their journey to healing is incredibly brave and inspiring. It's a powerful testament to finding peace and forgiveness, even amidst life's lowest points. Highly recommend for anyone seeking hope and guidance.
