Doing the Right Thing -Simple Solutions, Essential Tips, & Helpful Resources for Assisting Aging Loved Ones- by Debbie C. Miller

When I opened this book, I expected to learn about options for housing for retirement. I learned that there are certifications for senior housing and specialized experts who help seniors prepare to stay in their homes. I was pleasantly surprised that I found a plethora of housing options. I no longer believe that the only option is a tiny apartment in a nursing home, which would mean losing all my hobbies, freedom, and the ability to travel, as well as missing my beloved home.

Debbie has answers to questions you haven't even considered yet. I believe this handbook is something people should read at any age. There are important ideas that people should consider learning about before they retire. There are options for everyone’s liking. I loved the way Debbie presented staying in your own home and how to plan for doing so.

I did not realize that there were distinctive styles of retirement complexes, and for those looking for a small home, in these places, people can travel with no worries and enjoy close amenities and friends. Debbie shares her experience on the steps needed to transition from your current home to one of these small homes.

There are handy lists of step-by-step instructions for all these options and how to find help from professionals and legal advice. Maybe you want to stay in your home; she has a list of suggestions for remodeling to make your home safe and secure as you grow older. There are suggestions about professional services available that aid people in keeping their homes, addressing their health needs, and providing meal services.

After reading this book, I felt relieved to know that, with this information, I have a good understanding of the future. Debbie shared interesting stories of her experiences helping people. Overall, I was impressed with her honest perseverance and the deep involvement she and others with these specialized talents have in helping people make decisions and guiding them until their decisions become reality.

I liked the organization of the author’s advice and suggestions. There was nothing that I disliked about the book. I found no errors in the superb editing. Anyone would receive help from this helpful book. The style of writing is like a conversation with a friend: it has a lively pace and is fun to read. This is a book you would like to highlight passages and keep handy to refer to now and then. For these reasons, this book deserves the top rating of 5 out of 5 stars.

You've done an excellent job conveying the book's strengths, from its ability to answer unasked questions to its practical, step-by-step guidance on everything from remodeling for aging in place to transitioning to different retirement communities. It's wonderful that you felt "relieved to know that, with this information, you have a good understanding of the future." Wonderful review.

Based on what you stated in your review, this is a must-read for anyone who is retired and should start thinking about how and where they will live when they start to lose some of their independence. I especially appreciated how Doing the Right Thing dismantles common fears about aging and retirement living. Debbie C. Miller replaces anxiety with empowerment by showing that aging in place can be done with dignity, comfort, and support when you have the right information and resources.
