I strongly believe Dan Hendrickson did a marvelous job with this book. One of the dominant themes was betrayal, I did not expect Eric’s death. However the author used it to introduce the dirty wings of betrayal. I feel betrayal is a good team for novels because it exposes ones mind on the need not to betray others and the karma of betrayers. What are other themes present in this book.

Hi, I believe the author's focus on bringing out betrayal in the book is an attempt to deconstruct the contemporary society, where goals and dreams are motivated by selfishness band narcissistic tendencies. What actually struck me is that Dan had to find ways of killing Erick to foreground the theme of betrayal.

The major theme in this book is betrayal. Also, there are other things like determination and survival. Brandy's role portrays inspiring qualities like strength and independence.

I recognized the theme of loyalty between Brandy and her mother. There are also themes of love, slavery, and war.

I also think the book mostly centered on betrayal. But there were other themes too, like family, love and strength.

My least favorite theme was the romance, either one. This is my least favorite genre. I do like how the author brings out protection. (Of workers, of business owners, of people of differing races) It’s all in there.

A pirate book must have enmity (fight), love, hate, search for treasures, revenge, loyalty, betrayal, slavery...This one seems to have them all.

Basically, the obvious theme is betrayal. Dan focused more on porraying the major theme, and I think there are other themes like family, love, and survival.

Self-sacrifice was also a prominent theme. Brandy's mother sacrificed herself to keep her daughter safe and alive

In a way, I was not shocked by Eric's death. A powerful man who is feared by pirates in the Caribbean is bound to have enemies. But betrayal was not the only strong theme in the book. Others were love, friendship, revenge, slavery, and war.

A worth mentioning theme in this book is that the story follows the decisions and events that a teenage girl has to go through in a world that "belongs" to men. Such strong characters enrich readers' minds and make us wonder about everything a woman has to go through even nowadays.

I have not really been fond of pirate themed books or that genre until this one. As others above have said, this book covers so many themes, you are kept interested in it from the beginning all the way to the end.
Some themes include; love between parents and children, romantic love, fight to belong, the will to survive, starting over, friendships, protection and so many more.

Though the author obviously did portray the major theme of betrayal there was other themes such as love, family, friendship, slavery, and self sacrifice.
