Problem: Computer doesn't recognize .epub file (solved)

Post by Scott »

To the best of my knowledge, most desktops and laptops do not come pre-installed with software capable of reading .epub files. This can be troubling especially for the typical non-tech-savvy user. Moreover, the computer might not give very helpful error information when one tries to open the file because the computer will probably simply say that it does not recognize the file.

The solution is to install software on your computer that supports .epub files. There is plenty of free software for computers from trusted sources that can read .epub files. So there is no reason to pay for that. Alternatively, you can purchase an ereader device that supports epub files.

Here is a list of free applications that you can download from the internet onto your computer to enable it to read .epub files:
  • Adobe Digital Editions
  • AZARDI
  • Calibre
  • Nook App (downloadable app for computers, not to be mistaken for the actual Nook)
I believe all of those apps work on Mac and Windows. I don't think Adobe Digital Editions works on Linux nor do I know about a Nook App available for Linux, but the other two do work on Linux too I believe.

There are also many free apps, including the Nook App, for all smartphones that are capable of reading .epub files.

Here are some affordable ereader devices that are capable of reading .epub files:
I personally have the Nook Simple Touch, and I love it! Totally worth it! But I bet the other brands and the other kinds of Nooks are all also just as great.

Please note, the Kindle (starts at $79) does NOT support .epub at this time.
