I have had a Kindle Keyboard for over 3 years. The kindle is fine, but I mainly purchased it so I could buy the many free books on Amazon. I've saved many hundreds of dollars over the last 3 years. It's a space saver as well. Used to have thousands of paperback books before the kindle. Now I just have my favorites.

Never had a Kobo, but have done extensive research. They seem like a respectable reader. The format isn't an issue though since I use calibre and can convert to any format I need. Eventually I would like to get a Kindle Paperwhite, but there's no reason to since the keyboard is working fine.

I think it comes down to whether you want to contribute to the Amazon empire or not.
