I would definitely recommend an E-Reader! I have a Kindle Fire and I absolutely love it! Books are easily available at your fingertips with an E-Reader. You don't even have to leave your couch to purchase a book. You can get many free/cheap Ebooks, and most libraries now have an e-library, where you can borrow books electronically. It is super easy to get the books. If your E-Reader has WiFi, the books can be sent wirelessly. If it doesn't have WiFi, the books can be downloaded to a PC and transferred via USB -- which is really easy to do.

I personally have the kindle app but it's on a cheap tablet - I have the general function of a kindle plus other things I want like web browsing and android apps. Plus it was far cheaper than a kindle fire at about $70, but it really depends on what you want. Some people prefer the e-ink rather than a backlit screen and the simpler versions of kindles are great for that! I've had both the first and second versions of kindles in the past.

E-Readers are nice to have, depending on what kind of e-reader you buy its easy to get books. I have a Nook from Barnes and Noble and I can get magazines, newspapers, and books on it at once.

I too have been wondering if I should get one. I have been using my Galaxy Y (so tiny) to read but know I'll need a Kindle or some other ereader soon and I've seen some good recommendations so far so I just need to make the leap.

In a world where technology is shattering previous standards of access to media and entertainment, modern e-book readers offer consumers the ability to access thousands of books at their leisure. Early e-readers suffered from high prices bloated design, but in the five years since the introduction of the first Kindle in 2007, the choices have vastly improved. The latest versions of the Kindle series from Amazon and the Nook series from Barnes & Noble feature touch screen e-readers with E-Ink technology. Weighing in at less than 8oz and boasting battery life measured in the tens of hours, it's becoming increasingly difficult for the average person to ignore e-reader technology. Before making a purchase, however, it's important to consider if you want an e-reader at all.

The transition to digital books is happening faster than anyone expected. After years of false starts—think Stephen King's novella Riding the Bullet, released way back in 2000—ebook readers have soared in popularity over the past few years. Amazon's release of the first Kindle in 2007 was a turning point; now people are buying and downloading digital books at a breakneck pace.

I have a Sony S tablet, loaded with the Kindle app, the Kobo one and the Comixology one. For reading classics, it's a gem, as you can usually find them at no charge, and there's no extra weight if you decide to read something really chunky.

If you want to check ebooks out from your library, it might pay to check on brands before you buy. Our local library is catching onto the whole ebook thing, but here in NZ there's a licensing clash that means Kindles are exempt from being the list of compatible ereaders.

I told myself I wouldn't join the ebook reader bandwagon, but I ended up buying a Kindle last year for Christmas. It is definitely one of the best purchases I've made. Very easy to buy books and some authors offer their books for free as a way to promote it. If you're lucky, you can grab those freebies. I got a Paperwhite, btw. Really good product. And I heard the Paperwhite 2 is even better :)

I'm thinking of buying a Kindle for a Christmas gift to myself this year. I'm planning a trip for next year, and I'm really excited to have it with me on the plane. Last time I flew, I noticed numerous other travelers with E-readers.

I'm a little confused about how the transaction works - of purchasing the E-books. So I buy the E-book at Amazon, and how does it get onto my Kindle? Do I need to have the kindle connected to my computer beforehand? Or is the transaction somehow credited to my Kindle account, and my it shows up when I turn on my device? Thanks, Greg

I got a Kindle fire a couple christmas' ago and it is the greatest thing I own. Transactions work that you can buy the books on the kindle itself or through your computer and it will appear on your kindle automatically, as long as it is hooked up to the internet. It's pretty awesome there is no hooking it up to anything and download speeds are pretty fast.

I'm outside the US, but buy from Amazon for reading on my android tablet. When I buy a book, the site offers me the chance to start reading right away, or have the book sent to my device. It's automatically downloaded when I next start the kindle app, through the wifi connection.

Ereaders are great! Though they lack the feel and smell of real books they offer great benefits such as the lack of space that they take up. Also, I don't know about others, but on the kindle fire you can download comics, plays and poems as well as novels. They are also a great way to find new books or authors as anyone can publish on them. Most books are relativity cheap on there and a lot of the classics are free. It's easy and quick to download a book and due to the customisable fonts and size t=you can make it more personal too.
Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the replies. So, I can buy E-books from Amazon and have them loaded onto an Android (or similar) tablet? Am I understanding that correctly? That would be awesome if I could just buy a tablet and read E-books on it, without purchasing a Kindle device separately. Greg

It is really easy to download books. I have a kindle and it takes a matter of seconds for a book to download. Depending on the type of e reader you get you can play games and do other things.
