I think your analogy with Japaneese cars is seriously misplaced .... if there is one thing the Japaneese can manufacture it's the car. I've been driving various Nissan and Toyota models for years and they have never, ever let me down. And that's the experience of a woman who just about know how to put petrol & windscreen washer in a car. I the ebook has the longevity of a typical Japaneese car they will be around for a very long timeperusaphone wrote:I await their demise eventually, they do seem like a flash in the pan from today's scenario, much like a Japanese car they simply will not last. By the same token, the hypothetical Japanese car gets redesigned each year, but they still only have a limited lifespan. I await development at the same time as not holding my breath....!!

I am not a huge fan of e-books but I think they are here to stay.......with no reliability problems.

I think you are confusing two different things ... reliability and product shelf life, one has nothing to do with the other!

But if you have the original Kindle it still works and does what it was intended to do ... there is no obligation to update to the newer version that is a purely personal decision.perusaphone wrote:I await time for reliability, and product shelf life due to product design updates.... I believe I am correct in the fact that the original Kindle has been updated and is in fact outmoded even now, we have yet another model in place.......

I have one of the original iPads. They have been upgraded at least twice since then, but what I have does everything ( and more) that I could ask. I have no desire to buy a new model. I agree with Fran, it's a personal decision.Fran wrote:But if you have the original Kindle it still works and does what it was intended to do ... there is no obligation to update to the newer version that is a purely personal decision.perusaphone wrote:I await time for reliability, and product shelf life due to product design updates.... Most things these days have a built in destruct mechanism, otherwise, sales will not build over time. The everlasting light bulb went the way of all things and, was suppressed by lightbulb manufacturers... there are myriad examples like this that can be found.. !!!

People that use them seem to like them.
I've read only a few chapters off an ebook reader and it felt too weird to enjoy.
And I like the smell of a new book
