The on-site ads

I've recently been experiencing a new type of popup ad on some of the websites I've visited. They take over a corner of the screen, then after a countdown start the audio/video. I've made the mistake of thinking that by clicking the "X" I could delete or diminish the ad. Not so--it then covers the entire screen in a blackout.
That happened today on this site. Unfortunately I had just researched, thought through, and put together the correct grammar for a post. When the ad took over, 45 minutes of my time went up in smoke. (Perhaps the Universe called in an edit.

)
Anyway, I understand the need for advertising revenue, but that experience was disconcerting.

Yep I see where you are coming from, almost every time I log in here, theres a banner ad at the end of the screen with a kind of "Trust Rating" score on it and I have to delete it before I can move on. I have tried updating my AdBlock software as I have seen it on other sites too, if that fails then im going to install another ad remover on my laptop, all I can suggest is that you do the same, I think Scott is fairly up to date with protecting the site but of anyone else has similar problems post them here and Ill forward them on to Scott for further work, cheers.
Mike.

Ive run into the same thing on some sites. None on this one, but some have those ones that jiggle around and when you go to X them out, the screen does what you describe. It goes to the site, its usually some stupid thing where they want you to buy vitamins, viagra, one was an adult dating site and all kinds of dumb stuff.

I may have found the culprit(s). I tend to trust anything from Adobe, but accepted their "Shockwave" Active X the other day. It may also have brought on the "Mixi DJ toolbar" and "Wajam". All are now removed from Programs. Hopefully that annoyance will be over until the next wave comes along.

Ive heard some bad things about Adobe. They say to be careful with it, it can give you a virus. I keep getting pop-ups and I just ignore them.

This website doesn't have ads like that. If you are seeing popup ads, or worse yet popup ads that move around or are hard to X out, that is likely adware on your computer, most likely a browser hack. If you are using IE, I would suggest switching to a different browser like Chrome or Firefox which I find our much less prone to hacks. In any case, you would be wise to have a running virus protector and firewall. You will also want a good malware/adware scanner.
Personally, if my computer was that bad hit, I would just backup the documents I needed to an external device and than reformat the whole disk and re-install the operating software--then make sure the first thing I installed was the security software like a good firewall and virus scanner before connecting to the internet.
