I would prefer the darker color.

I prefer the dark cover. It sets the tone for an interesting read. It also highlights the seriousness the book.

I find dark backgrounds really effective, especially for a book centered on dark magic and suspense. They make the key elements, like the swirling smoke and the glowing box, stand out more vividly. It adds an extra layer of mystery, drawing you deeper into the story's atmosphere.

The new cover might be more appealing if you prefer a more polished and professional look. However, if you appreciate minimalist and artistic designs, the previous cover could be more to your liking. I like the new cover more because the polished design with graphic elements gives it a more professional and modern appearance. But I believe the minimalist and possibly handcrafted look might appeal to readers who appreciate a more understated and artistic cover.

The dark cover and rough background makes the adventurous and scary aspect of the novel feel represented here. The white one is not bad though, but I just think it seems a bit too bland for the content.

I really love the dark black background cover of the book. Black covers always work best for me and the box emitting light adds more spark to the cover.

The colors of the new cover are attractive, they give depth, where I think the first cover could have remained but in a deeper color tone. It is more suitable. The new cover with the cube with the smoke gave me a feeling that it is similar to another book that talks about magic.
Yes, the book contains magic, but perhaps another approach is needed to avoid confusion.

The new cover is definitely more attention grabbing to me. It seems more mysterious and would make me want to know more about and possibly read this book if I was encountering it for the first time.

I prefer the new cover because it looks more professional and it is more eyecatching. The old cover looked very amateurish, and it was not visually appealing. When I go shopping for books, I am drawn to the covers before I even read the title. So, if the cover looks attractive, the book has a higher chance of being bought.

I like the dark cover better because it matches the book’s feel. The white cover seems more like an early idea, not the final design.

Both covers are good, but I prefer the previous cover because it's quite original and would make the book stand out. The new cover looks like many other books and would blend in with them and not be so noticeable.

I haven't read this book, but I think the new cover is hands down the better choice. It feels more fitting to the fantasy genre overall, as well as being more eye-catching due to the contrast between the dark background and the box. The overall design feels a lot more professional than the original one, which has a more "home-made" feel. No offense intended to whoever made the first cover, but to me, the composition and font choice denote the work of an amateur designer.

The first one for sure. It gives me a bigger vibe of mystery and also magic. I agree with what others said, that the dark tones are more related to the theme of the book. The box is also really cool.

Totally agree, if I was looking at the second one in a bookstore would probably not catch my eye.
