It seems the book really met and even bettered expectations on many counts. Engaging world-building, cinematic writing, strong characters—especially how Spirit's journey turns out—all combine to make for a great fantasy debut novel. Though the fast narrative pace rushed some parts, overall the read was positive and engaging enough to leave one feeling good about reading more in this series. If you were expecting an engrossing action-laden fantasy, then this book really delivered.

I have to say that I was disappointed by the damons because I found them too human, so they quickly became mundane in my eyes. I mean, they're physically different, otherwise, a human faction capable of absorbing aether would have changed nothing if used instead of damons.

The book was actually what I expected. The adventure and bonds among the friends was something I looked forward to. I expected it to show their camaraderie for one another. What I didn't expect was the nature of his bond with Emily. However, it was still an aspect I enjoyed because the story made it seem natural and it also played a part in Spirit's character growth.
As long as there is a concept of victors, the vanquished will always exist.

Demonslayer by I.P. Eviston met and even exceeded my expectations. The book delivers a fast-paced and immersive fantasy adventure with compelling characters, vivid world-building, and well-executed action scenes. The intriguing magical system and the emotional depth of the characters, particularly the relationship between Spirit and his sister Emily, add layers of complexity to the story.

Yes, it exceeded my expectations. I went in expecting an action-packed fantasy, but I was pleasantly surprised by the emotional depth and character development. The relationship between Spirit and Emily added a layer of humanity to the story, and the moral dilemmas Spirit faced made the plot even more engaging. The world-building and magical elements were well-executed, and I’m excited to see where the series goes from here. It was a well-rounded read that kept me hooked until the end.

Ian P. Eviston's Demonslayer was better than I had anticipated. Rich mythology and intricate histories between humans and demons were part of the deep world-building. The finding family element gave the plot more complexity, and the magic system was fascinating. The various points of view, particularly the demon viewpoints, which gave the characters more depth, were well appreciated.

I was really disappointed that this book turned out to be more steampunk and urban than I expected going in. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t get invested and it turned into a DNF.
