In the book, the themes of friendship and kinship stood out to me the most. I was deeply moved by the friendship between Vanessa and Trisha, especially how Trisha always supported Vanessa despite her own doubts. The theme of kinship also resonated strongly, particularly through Barb's unwavering belief in her sister's survival, which highlighted the novel's supportive family dynamic.

Additionally, the theme of perseverance struck a chord with me. Vanessa’s relentless pursuit of a better life, despite numerous setbacks, is truly admirable. These themes—friendship, kinship, and perseverance—were central to my experience of the story.

While there were multiple themes, the one that struck me the most was the kinship between Vanessa and Trisha. They were both successful females in a male dominantes industry. While Trisha’s strength was loud and showy, Vanessa’s was a quiet strength. Both demonstrated how one can play to your natural strengths to succeed.

The most prominent theme I observed in "Deceptive Calm" is the profound motherly care that Sister Rosalie extends to Vanessa. Sister Rosalie's willingness to transcend traditional expectations and embrace the role of a mother for a child whose origins she did not know highlights an extraordinary depth of love. She made the significant decision to abandon her plans for a doctorate to remain and nurture Vanessa. This act is particularly notable given the context of the story, where Vanessa is depicted as white in an era marked by pervasive racism. Despite the societal and personal risks involved in a Black woman caring for a white child during that time, Sister Rosalie placed Vanessa’s needs above her own, demonstrating an unwavering commitment and sacrifice. Her dedication not only reflects a profound personal devotion but also challenges the racial and social norms of her time, underscoring the remarkable nature of her selflessness and love.

Another significant theme in the story is the genuine friendship between Vanessa and Trisha, which felt almost too perfect to be true. Their bond was so strong that they could easily be mistaken for sisters. This connection highlights the deep affection Trisha had for Vanessa. Despite Vanessa being white and adapting to life among Black individuals, even identifying with them, Trisha, who was undeniably white, remained steadfast in her love and support during a time of widespread racism. This unwavering commitment is truly commendable. Additionally, Trisha stood by Vanessa through challenging times. Even though she did not fully grasp the implications and consequences of abortion, she supported Vanessa's choice wholeheartedly, ensuring that she received the care she needed. Despite the challenges posed by distance, their friendship endured, demonstrating its resilience and depth.

The placid yet slightly frightening image and the book's title, "Deceptive Calm," imply that the work may explore themes of hidden secrets or surprising turns beneath an otherwise serene exterior. The cover is both aesthetically pleasing and thought-provoking due to the clean design and basic color scheme that draw attention to these significant aspects.

From what I see, the themes of this book are not something I would be interested in reading, but I do feel like many other people would definitely love the themes discussed in this book.

I found the theme of women's strength really interesting. Sister Rosalie, Trisha, and Vanessa are very strong female characters, all different and unique, but all firm and steadfast in their own ways.

I agree that resilience is one of the central themes. I think the whole story is about the "search for happiness", this is the essence of the lives of all the characters in this book (Vanessa, Trisha, etc.). The search and pursuit of happiness through friendships, difficulties, identity, family,...

Racial Inequality and social status seem to be one of the major themes in this book. It is heart wrenching to see just how much pain can be caused by what people perceive someone's social class to be. Vanessa with lily white skin doesn't fit in with the white race being born to black parents and she doesn't fit into the black race because of her white skin. Her husband is a nasty man calling her vile words when he finds out she was born to black parents and attempting to kill her and their child. I would hope that in today's society it would not be as big of an issue as it was back then but with hatred and inflated egos due to social hierarchy it is still a very real problem.

I notice many themes beautifully weaved in the storyline. Of these I liked the most the theme of the need for feeling belonged and accepted. It is this need that drives Vanessa's behaviour and decisions much like we all in our lives think and behave according how well accepted we feel by the people and society around us.

The book focuses on the themes of self-acceptance and self-identity. The main character, Vanessa, struggles with her identity as a black woman in society. Sister Rosalie is a personification of love and friendship for Vanessa. The story revolves around the themes of racial discrimination and social inequality.

I feel Colorism, Racism, Feminism, Classism, and Nationalism can be found in this books issue true in modern society. Colorism, Racism, and Classism being the most evident. However Feminism and Nationalism (Immigration Issues) are less pronounced in this read.
