I would probably rate this book a 2 out of 5. It was an okay book. The plot felt all over the place and it lacked depth but it was entertaining for the time I read it, not something I would read again though.

Overall, "Deceptive Calm" is a compelling read that blends historical fiction with romance. The novel effectively captures the tumultuous backdrop of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, weaving it into a captivating tale of love, loss, and identity.

I definitely did not like this book. I think the story had a lot of potential and I really wanted to like this. Having the perspective of a young black woman in the sixties for this story would have been so much better if the author was a black person and could portray their emotions and struggles in a more authentic way. I personally disliked how poorly the book was written. I perceived this story as hollow and found the forced and irrelevant facts quite boring.

I definitely agree... I was disappointed because a lot just felt surface deep to me and I didn't feel like I had any real connection with the characters. I'm glad I'm not the only one!

I rated it 3 out of 5 stars in my review. To summarize, I liked the characters, character development, and the overarching story, but I had issues with the editing, and some of the dates in the book were wrong.

It's an emotional story, and as a woman, I can relate to Vanessa and Trisha entirely. Although their decisions may not always be the best ones, I can totally understand the desperation that drove them to act in that way.

The picture on the cover is an interesting choice, it gave me peace and a positive feeling. I liked the romantic parts, the young girls becoming adult women, fighting for their rights, and trying to survive in a man-dominated world. I disliked the sexual parts with Todd, I found them too detailed. I would recommend this book to other people, as the story is great and you can learn from it.

I really enjoyed this book as it is a very deep history with some harsh elements. I gave the book 4 out of 5 stars due to some editing problems but besides this downside, it is an excellent book.

I found the book to be intriguing. The author was able to properly project the emotions of the characters that the readers could feel them too.

At first glance, the book cover exudes a profound sense of serenity and peacefulness, perfectly encapsulating the paradoxical theme of "Deceptive Calm." The tranquil image of a bridge, suspended elegantly over the water, creates a sense of stillness and composure. This visual representation masterfully conveys the idea that even in the most serene of settings, turmoil and upheaval can be lurking just beneath the surface. The cover's thoughtful design makes it an integral part of the overall narrative, beautifully foreshadowing the complexities and contrasts that await the reader within the book's pages. Overall, I would award this book a well-deserved 5 out of 5 stars, recognizing its masterful storytelling, thought-provoking themes, and captivating presentation.

I enjoyed the book. I liked Trisha's unwavering support the most, she epitomizes what friendship should be. The sex scenes were unnecessarily explicit, the same messages could've been conveyed with less detail. I found the writing simple and accessible to most readers. Genre is quite a mix; historical fiction is probably the closest, with the focus on racial issues and all the historical information provided. The cover and title are well-suited to the content. The greatest lesson I learned is from Sister Rosalie. She gave up the life she really wanted, but she didn't show any resentment; she was loving and caring and pursued her love of history in a different capacity. I will recommend the book to adults, it's definitely worth the read.
