What did you expect with the title of the book?

Post by Amy_Jackson »

Reading about this book on it's Book of the Day made me see it was so much more than the title portrayed. I'm thinking a different title that would hit the nail more on the head would be better. Though I can't think of one at the moment.
Do you think the title is fine as it is? If not, please suggest a title based on your understanding of the book.
Thank you 🙂

The title makes the mind go to a romantic or social side more than it is about building the self and work.
Another title I really can't say I have a clear idea about that, but actually it doesn't affect much on the judgement on the content.
Life is hard on its own so let's make it easier for each other if we could.

I think the title suits the contents of the book. People (bosses, family and friends) will love you when you are a sheep and they are the shepherd, and the moment you begin to open your mind and do things your way, they start hating and try to create limitations that you have to transcend.

I was hoping he would tell me about realities that we have all experienced. Many times you have to put up a facade to be accepted or fit in somewhere. Later, when we show ourselves as we are, they tend to get upset and not want us to be ourselves.

I think the name fits it appropriately because just like the title goes, they will love you until you start thinking for yourself. Once you want to break free from the leash they've had on you, you become a friend turner enemy. So the name suits it appropriately.

I think the title is apt for the book's content. People would love to take advantage of those they think are better than them just to lord them around. And the moment you try to stand up for yourself, it becomes an issue of you being insubordinate, disobedient—the list goes on.

I agree with you, especially on the part about bosses. I once had a boss who took credit for every little thing his subordinates did. It was painful to see him getting rewarded for work that my colleagues and I had done.

The title makes me think of a self help book, change your mindset change yourself types of books. Only after I read a synopsis of the book did I realize it was actually an autobiography, not the self help book that I initially assumed that it was.

I expected the book to be about the nature of opinion, purely a philosophical book. I was not expecting the author's life story as well, although I very much appreciate knowing about her background and learning how she incorporates that into her political and social opinions.

The title implies that the author has faced some adversity in her pursuit of her goals and that she may have discovered that certain people were not truly supportive of her for who she is.

Given the title of the book, I assumed this would be a self help book where people with people pleasing tendencies could learn to create solid boundaries and stand up for themselves.

I didn't like the title till I read the book. I understand what she meant then. She had to make her own decisions and take responsibility of her own life, despite of loving advice from friends and family.

The book title can be romantic or social in nature but does not influence the content to a great extent. The author refers to the difficulty of opening up and breaking through, referencing the fact of hiding behind a mask to belong and be accepted. This is what defines the need to accept oneself for who they are.

I was expecting to find out how the author overcame difficulties with asserting herself. I also imagined how she transitioned into a confident, person who began making her own decisions despite strong opposition from significant others.

I think the title worked well. Never underestimate the length people would go to feel accepted even sacrificing themselves in the process. So I think it worked as an eye-opener.
