Monica was brought up to believe that she alone is responsible for paving her road to success; she attributes her success to good work ethic and sacrifice. She is truly independent and relies on no one for her success. She does not understand how people can blame others for their lack of success in America. She would advise people not to blame the color of their skin or lack of opportunity for their lack of success.

Monica’s story shows how choosing your own path, even when others disagree, is part of becoming independent. The book shows how she stood up for herself, made bold choices, and kept going despite pressure to conform. It’s all about thinking for yourself and living true to who you are.
