The protagonists had to deal with their past and their problems in various ways. There's a lot of introspection as they sort of change their normal perspective and look at themselves in a different way. Each character creates their own experience and has their own reactions to it, which can include positive and negative reactions. They want to be happy, but is a virtual trip enough to find the key to happiness? It makes them - and us readers - think for sure!
