After going through an entire year inside a simulation, the characters return to their real lives with vivid memories.

So here’s something to think about: do you believe those simulated experiences became part of who they were?

I'm not a philosopher; however, reading the novel, I gathered the impression that the protagonists felt that their experiences were very real, even if they were very aware that they were simulations. They were influenced by what happened during those experiences, so does it really matter whether they were real of they "only" felt real?
